Cans to Cash in 38 Minutes

Monday, December 19th, 2011

It took 38 minutes for 6 people to pack Ted and Joan Stout’s very long stock trailer with aluminum cans.  The cans tat are dropped off at the crib come from local businesses and individual families.  Several times a year the cans are loaded into Stout’s trailer, and marketed to an aluminum buyer.  Funds are allocated to community help organizations such as Pipestone Area Softball and Baseball Association and Pipestone Area Community Foundation.  Helping load cans from the Pipestone Area Community Foundation were Kevin Paulsen, Chuck Sendelbach, Ed Hansen, and Mick Myers.  The funds will be used for community projects and grants.  The can crib is located just off 2nd Ave NE in the City Truck Parking lot.

Harmon Park Restoration Project

DECADES OF MEMORIES

PLEASE HELP THEM CONTINUE

The Pipestone Area Community Foundation has resolutely accepted the challenge of raising funds to restore some areas of Pipestone’s HARMON PARK that are in need of repair or improvement.  HARMON PARK, created in the 1930’s, is Pipestone’s largest, most visable and busiest park.  Since being built, there has not been a generation that has not:  met at or walked to HARMON; played baseball, softball, tennis or basketball at HARMON; sat on the picnic tables in the dark at HARMON, or just ‘hung out’ at HARMON.  The park now remains as busy in the spring, summer and fall as it was decades ago.

Our goal is to continue to promote a greater quality of life in the Pipestone area for present and future generations by helping to meet or expand immediate needs.  In conjunction with our administrative partner, the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF), we have targeted HARMON PARK as being the most visible and needed area of repair and restoration in Pipestone.  Obvious financial cutbacks at both the local and state levels have prompted our involvement.  In specifics, the following areas (with projected costs) are being marked for improvement:

  • Resurfacing tennis and basketball courts; $125,000.
  • Repair or replace basketball standards, fencing and lighting; $20,000.
  • Repair or replace outfield fence, dugouts, bleachers and lighting, plus install drain tile on softball field; $20,000.
  • Purchase and install a Daktronics “message center” at the highway intersection; $30,000.

The total estimated dollar amount of this project is $195,000.00

Interest in this restoration project, by word of mouth only, has already resulted in gifts of $35,000.00.  Grant application requests have been completed and submitted in hopes of additional funding.  This newsletter, as well as information on our website (www.pipestonefoundation.com) is the first formal request for financial help on this venture.  Simply, the Pipestone Area Community Foundation is appealing to your memories of HARMON PARK and the need for them to continue.  The Foundation remains truly grateful for your past, present and future support of our projects and looks forward to continuing to serve the Pipestone area for years to come.

Pipestone Area Community Foundation Receives Anonymous Gift

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

–Donor Specifies Use–

The Pipestone Area Community Foundation (PACF) recently received an anonymous donation of $5,000.00 with specifics from the contributor on how the gift should be used.  In correspondence with the Foundation, the donor requested that the group purchase four automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and cabinets to store the units.  Per instructions, three of the devices will be gifted to the Pipestone Area School District for placement at: the Paulsen Field Football/Track complex; Paulsen Field Softball complex; and the baseball complex at Westview Park.  The fourth unit will be presented to the Pipestone Performing Arts Center located in downtown Pipestone.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 350,000 deaths per year.  Sudden cardiac arrest differs from a heart attack in that in sudden cardiac arrest the heart fails to pump blood properly, resulting in loss of consciousness and death.  Sudden cardiac arrest can occur during or following a heart attack, or for no apparent reason.  Symptoms that often precede sudden cardiac arrest include: chest discomfort; pain or discomfort in one or both arms; back, neck, jaw or abdominal pain; shortness of breath; lightheadedness; cold sweat; or nausea.  However, in some cases of sudden cardiac arrest, no symptoms are present before the victim becomes unconscious.  In the event of sudden cardiac arrest, it is important to act quickly.

After calling 9-1-1 for emergency medical services and beginning CPR, an AED may be used if available.  An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a device that automatically analyzes heart rhythm and, if a problem is detected that may respond to an electrical shock, the AED permits a shock to be delivered in an attempt to restore normal heart rhythm.

Cooperation and guidance from Steve Ewing, Pipestone County EMS Director has led to the purchase of four LIFEPAK CR Plus Defibrillators from the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.  Kevin Paulsen, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Pipestone Area Community Foundation, expressed sincere thanks for the donation.  “This gift furthers the promotion of a greater quality of life through philanthropic endeavors- the goal of the PACF”, Paulsen said.

Foundation Supports 2010 Civil War Festival

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

The Pipestone Area Community Foundation sponsored educational programming for the 2010 Pipestone Civil War Days. With this funding it is possible to present a number of educational and informative programs at this event. The Pipestone Civil War Days originated in 1991, and the program was planned and operated by the Pipestone County Museum. After the second event in 1992 a biennial format was adopted for future events.  In 2000 the Civil War Days Committee was formed by the museum, consisting of citizens in the community, and the event became more focused on the historical lives of soldiers, merchants and civilians who lived during the war. The event allows visitors to interact in the lives of soldiers and civilians of the Civil War era and to learn through living history.  The event has educational and entertainment venues for the public to view re-enactors presenting their music, skills, and knowledge of this difficult time in our history.  Civil War Days is held at the Song of Hiawatha Pageant Grounds, near the Pipestone National Monument.

One of the sponsored programs was The Ladies Aide Society and U.S. Christian Sanitation Commission.  These were the nightingales of the Civil War.  They were the ladies of mercy who went on the battlefields to minister to the wounded.  They cared for the injured in the camps, wrote letters home for those who were not literate, and provided the spiritual guidance to others in the camps.  Another program was the Etiquette of Fans, Handkerchiefs, and Parasols.  during the Victorian period, women who used their fans, handkerchiefs, or parasols, were sending non-verbal messages to others, depending upon how they were displayed,  They were able to communicate their intentions to others with the subtle swoop of their hand. The Daily Life of a Civil War Housewife was a program on what life was like for women during the Civil War era. What these women did to keep their families fed, clothed, and the housework completed!

Other programs offered at the event included the role of the undertaker, the life of children, school days, etiquette, medicine, photography, naval history, clothing, dancing, blacksmithing, hot air balloons of the Civil War, Civil War music, children’s games, quilting, Minnesota’s role in the War, and Abe and Mary Lincoln. The roar of the cannon, the smell of gunpowder, and the performance of the actors, musicians, and other educators, resulted in a full immersion into the 1860s, possible for those who attend the event.

Author/Historian Brought to Rendezvous

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Rendezvous-PipestoneThe Pipestone Four Winds Association was formed in 2008 after a 60-year run of the “Pipestone Hiawatha Pageant.” The main goal of our group was to continue to bring revenue to the City of Pipestone while educating the public about the culture and heritage of our unique area. We have held two “Love of the Land” Rendezvous thus far and have continued to see success. This year we also had the first-ever chuck wagon cook-off in Minnesota and plan to continue with that next year. With the money we received from the Foundation we were able to have an author and authority on the Fur Trade era in our state and area come to this year’s Rendezvous. His name is Ryan Gale, and he has written three historical books and is working on a fourth. Without the Pipestone Foundation’s generous grant, none of these things would have been possible. The Foundation has been very instrumental in helping us to get these events going. As co-founder and Secretary of the Pipestone Four Winds Association, I would like to thank the Foundation for their continued support in allowing us to continue to reach our goal. ~ Cynthia Portz

New Website Launched

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Very recently we have introduced the first phase of our web site. You can visit us at www.pipestonefoundation.com.

There are three main components to our site; community information, contact information, and organization information.

Community Information

Community information will highlight the projects we are working on within Pipestone. We will also update with some recent news items regarding the changing landscape of the Pipestone Community. This information is readily seen as news postings on the home page and will include photographs as well as general information. Users can also click in further to learn more details about specific projects as they are introduced and updated.

We will post downloadable files of our current newsletters and provide links to additional online news and community events sources. Whether it be improvements to our parks, our schools, businesses, or organizations, we want to let people see the good things that are happening.

Contact Information

Contact information is your chance to connect with others. Much like a mini version of Facebook, we will have the ability to create user profiles. These profiles are a great way to stay in touch with old classmates or friends in the Pipestone community. Our site is centered around one thing we all have in common; Pipestone.

Get Involved in the Online Community

As our online community grows, we plan to use the site as a central database for class or community specific information. For example, the class representative for the class of 1985 could communicate details about the upcoming 25 year class reunion to be held in 2010. The representative will have access to a centralized database with current contact information. This will streamline the communication process for the event and get more people involved. Likewise as the community grows, members of that class could RSVP, confirm schedules, arrange to connect with old friends, and much more.

Member participation is critical to the success of any community. This component of our site will continue to grow with content and features. The first step is to generate the user profiles. We encourage you to get involved by creating your profile today. To create your profile, simply go to www.pipestonefoundation.com and follow the links to create a user account. Once you have done this, email, call, or tell your friends. This will make our community grow and be successful.

Organization Information

Our role in the community is important to many, and we rely on the support of those who care as much as we do. Our web site will allow our friends and supporters to understand who we are and what we are about. The Pipestone Area Community Foundation is made up of volunteers who give their time and talents to the organization’s ongoing success. We will keep everyone posted as to our objectives, successes, and challenges.

More importantly, success comes through the contributions of our supporters. We will recognize these supporters and the impact of their contributions in the pages of our web site, like this one.

The web site will allow for users to easily and securely make online contributions. The Southwest Initiative Foundation has organized an e-commerce component of the site to help us facilitate this. To make a contribution online follow the instructions on the How to Donate page. You will be directed to the secure contributions page of the Southwest Initiative Foundation. Online giving is not the only option available. We have posted our contribution form
to the site for easy download, printing, and mailing.

The Foundation is excited about the opportunities this web site offers. We look forward to building an online community that in turn helps to build the community around us.
